Inexact Info

Because you just might need to know this stuff someday

Well, Mom's stuff is all sold, and she's moved to her new home in Connecticut. There's nothing interesting for me to put here for sale right now, but now that everything has calmed down some, I'll be able to get back to selling (hopefully) some of the cool stuff that I have been making.

I always mean to blog a project when I finish it, but I'm obviously a little behind on that.  Here's three pretty simple ones that I did over the last few weeks:  a bag, a dress (which probably should have been a shirt) and some boxers.

The Bag:

I have wanted a corduroy shoulder bag for years!  First off, because I just love bags.  Seriously, I'm a bag junkie.  Just look under my bed.  Secondly, because corduroy feels so darn good, but I haven't figured out a way to wear those old corduroy jeans without looking like I'm going to a retro-costume party.  It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but I did spend a few minutes during the course of the project just petting the fabric.  I made this one from McCall's pattern M4851, but I added the little red satin butterfly applique because I had so much fun doing that technique on the flag for Danny's birthday.  I made one other change to the pattern instructions, which was using plastic canvas instead of the recommended cardboard for stabilizing and shaping the bottom.  This way, it should be able to survive a run through the washing machine if needed.  It's not a particularly hard pattern to make, but it is really nicely designed with multiple gusseted pockets on the inside and large pockets for umbrella's, water bottles, etc. on the outside - I wish it photographed better so you could see all the detail. The only problem is that it came out way bigger than I wanted it to.  Tommy suggested that I make a bunch of them and sell them to Brooklyn hipsters as diaper bags.

The Dress:

Nothing much to this one.  It's also made out of a store bought pattern (Simplicity 3799).  The only interesting story here is that I had originally bought the fabric to make some funky pants with, but luckily Tommy talked me out of it.  I'm just a bit disappointed that it's really too cold to wear this yet.  Also, I'm kind of thinking it may be better as a tunic than as a dress, but then I can always just chop a couple inches off the bottom later.

The Boxers:

Tommy and I don't do too much for Valentine's day, but since he had just got me that serger for my birthday a few days before, I wanted to make something for him.  I didn't have a pattern for this, so I just kind of made it up as I went along.  Turns out, they were a bit too big in the ass, but should be pretty easy to fix if I ever need to make another pair.  These really weren't intended to be wearable anyway, as it's just some cheap novelty fabric that would be really stiff and uncomfortable to actually wear as boxer shorts.  Still, they're kinda cute, and it's more practice for me with pattern making.  And I actually did the fly right!
